What Will You Find?

There are many reasons why people seek out Jesus. Some come merely to see a spectacle or to be entertained. Others come because they understand they are missing something and hope to find it in Christ. While many come to gain something from Him, God never turns any away. He invites all to “taste and see that the Lord is good!” (Psalm 34:8) All are invited, but few accept.

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Herod sought out Jesus, but his heart was not ready to leave the wide and easy path. He ‘tasted’ but turned away. It makes me think of sugary drinks. I used to drink a lot of sugary drinks. When I did, water tasted boring and seltzer water tasted bitter. However, since deciding to give up sugary drinks, everything changed. My favorite drink is now seltzer water. Now, when I try to drink a Coke, the taste is so sugar sweet that it is disgusting to my taste buds, and I simply can’t do it. Our tastes change with time. When we first commit to living a life that represents the narrow way of Christ, we may find it very difficult. We will still desire the ease and selfishness of the wide path of the world. However, the closer we walk with our Savior, and the longer we walk with Him, the less desirable the world becomes.

Whatever reason we came to see the Christ, we stay because He is our home. He satisfies better than anything the world has to offer. He is freedom. He is hope. The narrow path of faith comes with challenges but amazing benefits. Not only will our future be beyond what we could even imagine, our right here and now is better. It may not be easier, in fact, it most likely will not. What God promises is His presence, His peace, His strength, and His comfort. The journey may be difficult, and it may feel lonely. However, we will never be alone. God walks beside us. He comforts us and guides us. Taste and see that God is better than any lie the world celebrates.
