The Clock is Ticking

“With the advent of Jesus the last chapter of human history had opened, though it was not yet completed,” Michael Green. We have been waiting for the return of our Savior for millennia. Some people see this wait as proof that our faith is in vain. To this, Peter prepares us by telling us that scoffers will mock us. We can give the world definitive proof of the existence of God, and they will still see nothing and believe even less.

Verse 4 says that unbelievers will taunt, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.” However, we know this is not true. The evidence of Noah’s flood and Earth’s judgment with water can be seen on every continent and in every culture. The world simply chooses to ignore the proof and evidence given in abundance. It reminds me of Proverbs 26:4 which says, “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself.” If the unbelieving want to hold on tight to their unbelief, our words will never make sense to them.

Most importantly, we must remember the reason why God waits for His return. It is for love that He delays the destruction of this evil world. Verse 9 explains, “The Lord is not slow about His promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” It is for the sake of those who have not given God their heart that He waits. Love stays His hands, but it also has set a limit to the time of waiting. This is the promise we have. It is also the warning that should motivate us to share the gospel and the love of Christ. Only God knows when the last moment will be for the world to repent. Once heaven’s clock ticks its last, it will be too late. Our decisions (even those made by refusing to decide) will be eternal. Let us never forget that God’s silence does not mean He is not paying attention. His delay does not prove His inability to act. No matter what the fools of this world believe and promote, God is watching His clock and watching His children. He will act at exactly the right time. Will we be ready?
