Secrets Our Choices Reveal
Abram and Lot have grown so wealthy they can no longer share the same pasture and grazing lands. In an effort to eliminate fighting within the family, Abram suggests they separate. Having recovered from his moment of doubt and fear, Abram once again shows faith in God’s provision and protection by allowing his nephew to choose which land to take first. Lot chose and his choice would shape the outcome of his life.
From a worldly perspective, Lot’s choice, though selfish, was the best. He chose the land that was, “Well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord.” He chose the direction which would lead him to worldly prosperity. This choice; however, would also lead to spiritual decline.
Surely Lot knew of the wickedness of Sodom. If he had not known about it before moving his family close to its walls, he certainly discovered it quickly. Instead of moving further away from their wickedness, he pressed his tents closer. Considering this choice, Matthew Henry wrote, “Those who, in choosing relations, callings, dwellings, or settlement, are guided and governed by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, or the pride of life, cannot expect God’s presence or blessing.” What is truly best for us is what is best for our souls first and our comfort last.
We all have many choices to make. Let us make them with spiritual eyes. Let us see the temptation lurking behind every decision and chose the path which leads us closer to the Lord. It may not always be the one that looks the best from the lens of worldly glasses, but our hearts don’t belong to a worldly king. 2 Corinthians 6:17-18 commands us, “Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” Chose righteousness over comfort. Chose faith over prosperity gotten from selfish gain. Chose love over hate. Chose God over the world. Our choices are opportunities to step out in faith and grow.
