Our Greatest Need Met
The God who created man’s heart and soul knows exactly what remedy we need in every situation. While there are many things we each need, our greatest need is salvation. None of the other problems we face compare to our sin problem. That is why God took such great care to fix that problem. Humanity would have to wait for the perfect moment for the Messiah to come, but perhaps that is a part of the gift. God foretold of our salvation coming from the beginning of sin. As soon as the ultimate and first crime was committed, God promised a remedy. Through the years, He whispered and shouted of the coming rescue we needed. Scriptures like Isaiah 28:16-18 promised our remedy to a world desperately waiting for salvation. This verse says, “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trust will never be dismayed. I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place. Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the grave will not stand.” God knows exactly what we needed most.
Tim Kimmel wrote a beautiful poem that illustrates this. It is called Man’s Greatest Need and it reads:
If man’s greatest need had been knowledge,
God would have sent us an educator.
If man’s greatest need had been physical health,
God would have sent us a doctor.
If man’s greatest need had been money,
God would have sent us an entrepreneur.
If man’s greatest need had been excitement,
God would have sent us an entertainer.
But man’s greatest need was forgiveness,
so God sent us a savior.”
There are many things we need in our life. God doesn't discount our need for knowledge, health, money, love, or excitement. He offers everything we need to meet these needs as well. However, there is one greatest need we all have, and none of the remedies of this world could every meet that need. Only God can fill the void in our life. Only God can save us from the covenant with death that sin forced us to sign. We are free – though we may not possess much knowledge or be able to boast of strong health; though we may be poor, and our lives may be dull. God provided exactly what we needed. Jesus answers every insufficiency we may have. When we have Christ, we have all we need – and we are absolutely free.
