Heaven’s Perfection

Marriage is a symbol. God gave us marriage to help us understand heavenly principles. Just as the temple represented things not of this terrestrial land, many of the rights and passages of humanity were given to us to prepare us for what lies ahead. Marriage can only be as perfect as the people committed to it, which – considering we are a fallen race of humans – isn’t that perfect. However, marriage was given to us to explain the hierarchy of heaven. This is the way Paul explains marriage in Ephesians 5:21-28. He wrote, “Be subject to one another out of reverence to Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” Considering that the act of marriage, the life-long commitment of marriage, was given to humanity to help us understand how Christ leads us, protects us, and provides for us, we will no longer need the lesson once we walk upon Heaven’s golden streets.

But let’s be real, the men who came to question Jesus didn’t really want an answer. They would not have accepted it regardless of what it was. They wanted to alienate Jesus from half the crowd. They wanted to trick him into saying something others didn’t agree with. They wanted to prove themselves smarter. Perhaps that is why Jesus’ response was so perfect. These men thought they were so smart, and Jesus plainly told them they were ignorant. Not only did he chastise their intentions and put them in their place by telling them they “know neither the scriptures nor the power of God,” he corrected one of their greatest failures. In verse 25, Jesus announces that the resurrection is real by saying when they rise from the dead.” Our resurrection is not something to debate. We don’t have to speculate or wonder if it is real. We will rise again, and it will be the perfection of all the symbols we were given on this earth. We will not marry or be married, but we will walk with our Savior. We will bask in His light. We will be healed, restored, perfected. No one else’s opinion of us matters except our God’s Nothing else we do in this world matters except that we accepted Jesus as our Savior. Everything else is background to the thing that truly matters. Those that say any differently are mistaken because they know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.”
