Giving It All
Today’s reading is the beautiful story of a widow placing everything she had to live on – two small copper coins- into the offering. Jesus claimed her gift was larger than all the rich men’s gifts. I wonder if we appreciate the lesson behind this event. Jesus wasn’t telling us to empty out our bank accounts and live in poverty. He was pointing out her faith. It is her faith that inspires me. It is her faith that challenges me. She gave it all.
Faith means trust. This widow expressed her trust in God’s provision. She understood the lesson Jesus taught in Matthew Chapter 6. He said, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O men of little faith.”
Worry seems like a natural part of life. There are so many things we have to worry about. We can’t control far more than we can. We cannot control the weather, the economy, the actions of others… the list goes on. What we can control is our actions of faith. The widow at the temple acted on her belief that God was Jehovah-Jireh – God our Provider. What actions can we do today that show our faith in God’s ability to keep us safe and meet our needs?
